How to Make “Stained Glass” Candle Holders for Kids

Candle Holders

In our home we love fairy lights and lanterns and thanks to LED lights we can enjoy them with small children and pets without having to worry someone gets hurt. We are using battery operated tea lights for this craft but you could use candles if you prefer.

How to Make Stained Glass Candle Holders

Materials:

• Small mason jar, glass or candle holder. (Ours are from the Dollar Store.)
• Tissue paper in varied colors
• Mod Podge
• Flat paint brush or foam brush
• Scissors
• LED tea lights

This craft can get messy with small children, so make sure to lay cardboard or newspaper on top of the table to protect it from Mod Podge drippings. 

Instructions:

Cut the tissue paper in small pieces. You could cut them into stars or hearts, but my children just chose random shapes. 

Just a tip: If you are thinking about using shape punches with tissue paper I have to disappoint you, it doesn’t work. We tried punching out butterflies and the tissue paper just didn’t cooperate.

Take the brush and apply a thin layer of Mod Podge on the outside of the glass.

Another tip: If the Mod Podge is thick and gooey you can thin it out with water. Just pour it into the jar and mix well.

Apply tissue paper pieces to the glass. Make sure to slightly overlap them for better results. It is okay if they stick out over the rim or bottom, that can easily be corrected later.

Now comes a tricky part that small kids might need assistance with. Apply another coat of Mod Podge over the tissue paper layer to seal it. Do only press lightly or the paper will tear.

If there are pieces sticking out over the rim of the jar, cut them down with scissors and Mod Podge them to make sure they are sticking to the glass. Repeat with overhanging bottom pieces.

Let your candle holder dry for a few hours, then add the LED light and admire your work!
