Bird Feeder
As soon as Spring started and we heard the birds outside, I wanted to make a bird feeder. I wanted it to be easy, cheap, and something the kids would enjoy. I do enjoy watching the birds. I think when we eventually own a home, I want to have a bunch of bird feeders. Maybe I’ll even buy a nice bird watching book.
My kids were pretty excited about it as well.
Bird Feeder Fail
Let me also tell you about my EPIC fail. We tried to make a bird house feeder out of popsicle sticks, but it didn’t end up working out. My hot glue gun was dying, I think, so it wouldn’t stick. As an alternative I tried using these foam glue squares I had. Let me tell ya…not a good idea.
It looked good at first, but it didn’t end well.
I hung it up, and it broke by the end of the day. Plus, it was a lot more work than I wanted to do. My kids painted about half the popsicles sticks before they wanted me to finish it on my own. I wanted to do something that involved them more, and took less time, so I decided on the bird seed ornaments.
I had looked up a few, and found one that I loved. It was easy, and I had all the ingredients on hand.
Here’s how we did it.
How to make Bird Seed Ornaments
Supplies:
Waffle Ice Cream Cones
Peanut Butter
Bird Seed
String (we used fishing string, and it worked great, you really need a thin/skinny string. I started with some twine, but realized it was too big)
Knife
Instructions:
Using the tip of a knife or scissors, poke or cut a hole in the bottom/tip of the cone so that your string easily fits through.
Cut a piece of string as long as you’d like it to hang, and string it through the top and bottom/tip of your cone. Tie a knot so the string is closed.
TIP: I recommend stringing the cone before applying the peanut butter or else you’re going to get peanut butter all over your hands.
With a knife, apply peanut butter all over the cone. (This is where the kids have a blast!)
Pour and lay out some bird seed onto a plate.
Roll the peanut cone in the bird seed so that the bird seed sticks to the peanut butter.
Hang the ornament in a place where the birds can reach it.
TIP: Don’t put it too low, or the squirrels will get it.
Are the Bird Seed Ornaments Healthy for the Birds?
Now you are probably asking the same questions I was: Are these healthy for the birds?
From the research I did, the quick answer is yes.
The bird seed, obviously, is safe. The peanut butter is high in protein and other nutrients that are good for birds, and the waffle cones are low enough in sugar that they are safe. This was one of my sources for finding out the information.
This is a great activity for bird lovers. Bird Seed ornaments are super simple, takes a few minutes, and the kids love it!
I wish I got a picture of the birds in action! Let me know if you do, and comment the below. Or if all else fails, you can just buy a bird feeder, haha.
