Blot Painting Craft for Kids that is Stupid Simple
If you need a super simple painting activity for kids, this is probably the easiest one out there: the blot painting craft for kids. It’s simple AND awesome.
Blot Painting Craft
I think this is the most simplest and easiest craft on my blog. Maybe. I have a TON of simple crafts, but this craft only requires two things to do: paint and paper. AND it was a bigger hit then I thought it would be.
That is the best feeling, when you plan something fun for the kids that you aren’t sure they will like and it turns out being super fun. There is literally no skill required, and I think it might be easier for those who don’t have much skill with crafts. It might turn out a little better. (I said a little). I can sometimes let my perfectionism get in the way, but it was a little easier to let go with this craft. There really is no way to mess it up.
There are also so many different directions you can take this craft. I really don’t think you can go wrong.
Side note: I made sure to put down a sheet and some newspaper so that it was an easy clean up.
Here’s how we did it.

Blot Painting Craft for Kids
Supplies:
Paper (I used computer paper and construction paper. I think construction paper is a little better because it’s sturdier and cheap. If you only have writing paper on you, use it, it’ll work.)
Paint (I recommend acrylic craft paint because it’s cheap and works on just about everything)
Optional: googly eyes, pom poms, glitter, or paint brushes. You can literally add any type of decoration you want to it, so whatever you have on hand, but you don’t have to.
Instructions:
Drop paint on your paper in dots or blots. You don’t have to worry about it being perfect, you can put it anywhere. If you’d like to be a little more creative, you could try to drop it in a pattern. Keep in mind that you will be folding the paper so imagine an invisible line down the center.
Fold your paper in half and open it to reveal your awesome design.
If you have extra supplies, you could add glitter, eyes, cotton balls, pom poms, or paint it more with a paint brush. The possibilities really are endless. My kids love glitter so we used the glitter. We didn’t end up using the googly eyes even though I had some.
My kids wanted to do this over and over and over again. They loved the reveal. They just couldn’t wait to see what design they made.
Alternative ideas for Blot Painting with Kids
- You could just throw paint on the paper in no order at all and have all the fun in the world. BUT if you’re feeling a little more fancy and free, here are some great ideas to up your blot painting game:
- Try to make half a letter of the alphabet on just one side of the paper so that when you close it, it forms the whole letter. I think this would be great for elementary students or preschoolers.
- Try to create a pattern on just one side so that the pattern continues on the other side when you open it.
- Do a random design, but when you open it, try to figure out what it looks like. If it looks like a fish, add some eyes and a mouth. If it looks like an airplane but it’s missing a wing, use a paint brush and paint in the missing wing. You could also get a marker, once it’s dry, and trace the animal, shape, or design that you see.
- Paint a word on the fold of the paper and then see how it mirrors itself once you close and open it. You could also do your child’s name.
Make it your own and have fun with it. I really enjoyed blot painting with my kids. Simple can most definitely be awesome!
