Learn Numbers with the Finger Paint Caterpillar for Preschoolers
Teach your toddler or preschooler how to count with this simple finger paint caterpillar activity.
Learning Numbers
There are so many creative ways to learn numbers. Finger painting is a kid favorite and puts a little twist on painting. The idea is that you create a caterpillar head and have your child add the caterpillar body with a specific number of segments with their fingers.
You can create different caterpillar heads yourself, or you can print off my template. My template includes 12 different caterpillar heads with numbers and different colors.
This activity not only teaches how to count, but it also is a color match activity. Match the color of the caterpillar head to the color of paint you use.
You could make it a little more advanced and teach your kids how to mix different paints to get different colors that match even better.
Here’s how we did it.

Finger Paint Caterpillars
Supplies:
Paint
Paper Plate
Caterpillar Template
Instructions:
Print off the template. I recommend printing in color, so you can match the colors.
Put your paints on a paper plate or paint tray. Get out the colors that match the caterpillar heads.
Have your little one add the body, using his/her fingers, of the caterpillar according to the number that is listed to the left of the caterpillar head. i.e. if the number 4 is there, then have your little one add 4 dots to the head to complete the body, with their fingers.
They also want to try and match the color of paint to the caterpillar head. Do this for all the numbers!
