There are so many fun Halloween crafts out there. It is a great holiday for making crafts. There are just so many different things that you can do. I mean, who doesn’t love making spiders and creepy stuff? Haha, just kidding!
You can be the Halloween mom queen this year, with this easy paper plate spider web craft. It makes fun Halloween decor for your home. Let’s get started reviewing what makes this craft so great, and how to make it.
Why I Love This Paper Plate Spider Web Craft for Toddlers, Preschoolers, and Kids of All Ages
My kids hate scary stuff. This craft, however, has a fun-loving, cute little spider. This is a great craft for helping kids with their motor skills, and my seven year old and three year old loved it.
I knew I wanted to get on top of doing Halloween crafts this year. My daughter loves decorating for holidays, mostly Christmas and Halloween. I am not a huge Halloween person, but my daughter pushes me every year to decorate, and it usually ends up happening around the end of October. Then, I feel bad because I didn’t let her do it earlier.
Not this year. This year I’m on top of it. We have already gone to the Dollar Store for decorations and it’s not even October. We have also completed our first craft. I loved this craft so much, I wanted to make one after we did it, and I still might.
I was thinking about making one on a bigger scale, like with a poster board or something. That would be really cool on your door or wall. I knew I wanted to make a spider web because I think they are pretty cool. Here’s how we did it.
Paper Plate Spider Web Yarn Craft Supplies
- Paper Plate
- Construction Paper for a Spider or my FREE Spider Template – I made a template because I tried to make a spider without drawing anything out. I just went for it and cut it. You can see in the pictures that it’s not very good. Good thing kids don’t care about those things. Download the template to actually have a nice spider.
- Pom Poms (optional)
- Scissors
- Glue – glue sticks work just fine
- Black Paint (or a color of your choosing)
- Orange Yarn (or a color of your choosing)
- Paint Brush
- Hole Punch
- Googly Eyes (optional)
You could definitely get away with just printing and cutting out the spider, and you do not need googly eyes or pom poms if you don’t have them on hand. You could also use whatever paint color and yarn color you have on hand. Kids usually don’t care. I’m pretty sure I bought most of these things from the Dollar Store.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cut out the inner circle of your paper plate without cutting the outer rim. You can throw out the inner circle.
Step 2: Paint the outer circle of your paper plate, front and back, with your black paint.
Step 3: While your paper plate dries, assemble the spider. I cut out the spider while they were painting.
Step 4: Cut out the spider. See? Horrible spider, haha.
Step 5: Glue on the googly eyes. We did a glue stick and they stayed just fine. I was a little afraid I’d need a hot glue gun, but you don’t.
Step 6: Glue the pom poms to your spider. You could do one or two. One of my kids did one and one did two.
Step 7: By this time the paper plate should be dry. Using the hole punch, punch holes about one inch apart around the inner part of the circle.
Step 8: Cut a piece of yarn. I did probably about 18 inches. You can do whatever you want. I didn’t think the kids could handle more than 18 inches. I did have to cut two pieces.
Step 9: Thread the yarn through the holes however you’d like. You could do a pattern, or just keep it random. With kids, they usually just keep it random. My three year-old needed a little help with this part, but really enjoyed threading it.
I threaded the yarn about half way through and then gave it to them, after they had threaded the first part, I knotted it onto itself, so it would stay. The holes are a little big to just tie and knot and start threading. Then they threaded the second half.
Step 10: Place the spider in the webbing. If you tangle it up, it will stay. If you don’t want to do this, you could also glue it on.
How did your paper plate spider web crafts turn out?
My kids loved it, and they played with it for a couple days after they made it. They couldn’t wait to hang it up somewhere. They loved taking the spider in and out and playing with it. I will definitely do this craft again, it was a lot of fun. Happy Halloween!
Finally, before you go be sure to download the spider template.
