Cinco De Mayo

We haven’t celebrated Cinco De Mayo too much, but I think it’s a good time to talk about other’s cultures and for the kids to learn something new. Although many people think that Cinco De Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, it is not. It was a victory of a battle against the French. It’s monumental because the Mexicans won even though the French outnumbered them. They had about 5,000 troops while Mexico only had about 2,000.

It isn’t widely celebrated throughout Mexico, but it is in Puebla, where the battle was fought. In the United States, we celebrate it as a day to learn and appreciate the Mexican culture. I think that is a fantastic idea!

Piñata Traditions

It is traditional to celebrate with the Mexican flag, bright colored dresses, balloons, streamers, and a feast of Mexican food. Piñatas are still part of Mexican culture today, but are mostly found at Birthday parties. They also do Christmas Piñatas where they fill them with fruit, candies, and sugar canes! You might consider putting fruit in your next Piñata. A fun way to bask in the Mexican culture is to make Piñatas, so why not make your own?

Here’s how we did it.

How to Make a Homemade Piñata

Supplies:

  • Paper Lunch sack
  • Candy or small toys (Dollar Tree is a great place to find them)
  • 3-4 pieces of Tissue Paper (preferably two different colors that you like). Dollar Tree is an awesome place to buy tissue paper, or buy a huge pack on Amazon that’ll last you forever for a pretty decent price.
  • Twine
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch

Instructions:

First, put your candy in the bottom of the paper sack. You don’t want it too full or it will be too heavy. You want it about half full. You can also add some small toys with the candy.

Next crumble up big pieces of tissue paper and fill up the rest of the bag. 1-2 will do the trick.

Pinata Paper Sack

Close the bag and fold it over. Glue it shut. (If you have a stapler, you can also staple it, but glue worked for us.)

Next cut about 5-6  stripes of tissue paper and make cuts all around it so that it makes ruffles. (as pictured below)

Paper Sack Pinata

Making any pattern that you desire, glue the tissue paper all around the paper sack in layers. Overlapping as you go, as pictured.

Once you’ve covered your paper sack, punch two holes in the top about 1.5 inches apart. (a heart hole punch was all I had on hand at the moment.)

Thread some twine through the two holes and tie a knot at the top.

Hang a pinata

Now you can hang it on something (like a tree) and hit it like a piñata.

Enjoy! I hope you can celebrate some Mexican culture with this homemade piñata.
