Every year we try to make a different ornament for our tree. The kids really enjoy it, and I love having homemade ornaments all over the tree. I decided to pick this Santa paintbrush ornament this year because it’s super cute, and I love the idea of using a paintbrush, such an ordinary thing, to make something cool.
I did this craft with a 3 year-old, 4 year-old, and a 7 year-old. They all had fun, but I would gear this craft more towards the 5-10 year-olds. There is a lot of hot glue in this craft, so they were limited on doing a lot. They all enjoyed picking out the ribbon, eyes, and pom poms for their Santa, and they all were so proud when we finished.

How To Make a Santa Paintbrush Christmas Ornament
Let’s get started learning more about how to make this Santa ornament craft, starting with the supplies you will need and then the step-by-step instructions.
Supplies
- 2″ Paintbrush (these work great)
- Acrylic Paint- red, white, pink, and black
- Paintbrushes
- Googly Eyes (optional)
- White Felt
- Red, Green, and White Pom Poms (I found mine at the dollar store)
- Ribbon (a few different varieties)
- Hot Glue Gun
Instructions
First, paint the handle of the paintbrush red.
Then, paint the bristles of the paintbrush white. Let dry.
While it dries, prepare your felt by cutting a 1/2 inch to 1 inch strip of white felt to go around the paintbrush. This will go around where the metal part and the handle meet.
Cut a piece of ribbon to go around your felt. Cut out the beard. Start with a square and then cut it like it is shown in the picture below.
Prepare your pom poms and googly eyes, if you’re using them. I let the kids make as many choices as possible and they picked out all the colors and eyes they wanted. Once your paintbrush dries, hot glue the strip of felt around the paintbrush where the metal part and the handle meet.
Hot glue the ribbon around the bottom of the felt strip you just applied.
Hot glue a pom pom or embellishment to the left bottom corner of the felt strip and ribbon.
Glue 4-5 pom poms to the handle. Glue on googly eyes, if you want them. If you want to paint a peach face, do that before the googly eyes. Glue on the beard and a pom pom for his mouth.
Using your paint again, paint a face on your Santa.
Cut a piece of ribbon and tie it in a loop around the hole in the hand. Make it long enough to hang on a tree.
Now you have this cute little Santa paintbrush Christmas ornament to put on your lovely tree. And one that will last, but be packed away in a box for most of the year.
Santa Claus Paintbrush Ornament Craft Tips
You could probably use whatever paintbrush you want to buy, but I recommend getting the 2 inch one that has a wooden handle and long bristles. We used a variety of different brushes that I found for cheap. They worked fine, but the wood one and the long bristles looked the best.
You can use whatever you want for the band around Santa’s head. We did pom poms because they were cheap. You could also use felt flowers, holly, or another type of embellishment. Make sure you wait until the paint is really dry or it makes it harder to apply all the other things.
You can use the end of a paintbrush to make the eyes and nose. It makes it a lot simpler. You can also use googly eyes if you don’t want to paint them. You could draw a face before putting on the eyes, checks, and nose, but I just made it easier for the kids by not doing it.
I hope you have as much fun as I did creating this Santa paintbrush ornament.
Once you get all your supplies ready, this holiday craft is pretty easy. It also let’s each person bring their own creativity to the project. I hope you enjoy creating some cute Santas for your tree!
