Trace Shadows (1)-min

I think shadows are pretty interesting. I know my kids are fascinated by them, so it only make sense to do something that piques their interest. This activity is so simple, but also very entertaining.

The first time I introduced it to my kids, they were super excited and a little surprised.

Here’s how we did it.

How to Trace Shadows

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Toys/objects

Instructions:

This activity puts a twist on drawing.

Go outside or by a window in your house where the sun is shining.

Lay down some plain paper and then put a toy on the edge of the paper so that the shadow is cast on the rest of the paper.

With your pencil, trace the shadow.

You can do this with a number of different toys and objects.

What else can you do with Shadows?

  • You could do this on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk instead of paper.
  • You could buy the big butcher paper and lay it outside and line up all types of toys.
  • Do it outside with paint instead of pencil.
  • Have them color it after they trace it.
  • Make a montage of objects to create a whole scene on a piece of paper and then color it.
  • Place it upside down and see what the shadow would look like.
  • Stand outside and trace your own shadow onto the sidewalk.
