Last Minute Kids Valentine’s Day Box (1)

In this post you will learn how to make a last minute Valentine’s day box for your kids Valentine’s day party.

Valentine’s Day Box

Need a last minute idea for a Valentine’s day box? I got one!

Last year my daughter made her Valentine’s day box at school. This year, I, stupidly, thought they would do the same thing. Well, 3 days before her valentine’s day party her teacher emails us and says they need to bring a Valentine’s box to school. WHAT!? As a working mom, last minute things can be rough. (I am in no way blaming her teacher, we LOVE her teacher.) I should have known!

We had 2 of the 3 evenings planned so I decided that we would do it the night before. We had nothing planned, so it would be a perfect night for it. Well, as usual, something came up. We didn’t get home until late and we had done nothing to even start a box.

I had a few ideas of what to do, but now it came down to the quickest.

Tangent: As a working mom, I used to beat myself up because I wasn’t doing everything perfect when it came to school events and projects. However, its inevitable, I’m going to miss things. I would love to spend a whole afternoon working on school projects with my daughter, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen.

I’m here to tell you, don’t beat yourself up. Make sure you are taking the time when you can and that it’s valuable time, and then your kids won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything.

Anyway….

You could have had the box built by now.

This is a simple way to make a box when you have little time, forgot you needed a box, or are unaware that you are supposed to make a box. (Like me)

We got back late the night before the box was due and we put it together in about 5-10 minutes. (That includes gathering supplies). My daughter woke up about 10-15 minutes earlier the next morning and finished decorating it.

You will most likely have the items already on hand if your generally crafty.

I apologize for my pictures. It really was a last minute project, but I wanted to show you how in case you ended up in the same bind!

How to make a Super Last Minute Valentine’s Day Box

Supplies

Valentine's Box

Wrapping Paper (any kind: Christmas or Birthday. If you have Valentine’s wrapping paper, you could definite use it, but you don’t need to go out and get any. Also, butcher paper would work really well.)
Shoe Box (any kind: old, new, big, small)
Tape
Scissors
Box Cutter (Anyone will work. This is the one we use, and it works great for all kinds of projects. It comes in handy.)
Decorating Supplies (you can make your own decorating supplies by cutting out hearts from scrapbook or construction paper. Red ribbon, stickers, or thickers are all good decorating supplies, and for pretty cheap.)

Instructions:

(Again, I apologize for my horrid pictures. I really did just throw this together in like 15 minutes. I was tried and it was late.)

  • Using the underside of the wrapping paper, wrap your shoe box completely. You could also tape down the lid if you were worried about it coming loose. I would not try to wrap the lid open, then you’d have a 30 minute project on your hands. But if you are really good at wrapping, more power to you.

Valentine's Box

  • Cut a square on top of the box with the box cutter, big enough to be able to pull things in and out of the box. If you only make a slit, it will be hard to put valentines in and out. Especially since the valentines are usually with candy, a small toy, or a pencil. You could just cut 3 sides of the square so that it becomes a little flap. My daughter liked it more completely off.
  • I taped around the edges of my square so that the paper wouldn’t come off. We decided to use the painters tape because it was blue and colorful. You could also use any duct tape or wasabi tape you have. Or even just clear tape.

Valentine's Box decorate

  • Now decorate. You can have them color directly on it with sharpies, Glue or tape ribbon or die cuts. You could also stick stickers or thickers on it.

And that’s how you make the fastest Valentine’s Box ever!

This really is the simplest way to make a box, but when you’re limited on time, it’s not bad. My daughter still loved it. She was so excited for her party, and she even wrote a little note attached to her valentine for every single person in her class. So sweet!

Valentine's Box for kids (3)

I was surprised, but her box was BY FAR not the simplest one there!

The box also lasted the whole day. No tears, and it was easy to get the valentines in and out.
